The trick: Moved Goalpost

AI 'needs $6 trillion a year' to justify the data-centre boom.

The number is a $1.5 trillion spending forecast divided by an assumed ratio of about a quarter.

Issue 311 October 202610 receipts3 min

Bain & Company's 2026 Global Technology Report says funding AI's compute demand would require $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031, with existing consumer and enterprise AI at $1.2 trillion to $1.8 trillion and $4.2 trillion left to new categories.

Before you read on. Your call?

The National reports the derivation: Bain forecasts $1.5 trillion a year of AI infrastructure spending by 2031 and assumes capex is about a quarter of revenue, a share Bain calls ambitious but reasonable. $1.5 trillion divided by a quarter is $6 trillion; change the ratio and the headline changes.

The twist

Bain's 2025 report said $2 trillion in annual revenue was needed by 2030. A year later its own requirement is three times larger, and the record does not reconcile the two.
