Nvidia's release says Sentry is an out-of-band watchdog that runs on BlueField-4 DPUs. Nvidia's developer blog says each compute tray already includes a BlueField-4, that on Vera systems enabling the protections is just a software update, and that Sentry is optional. BlueField-4 was named in Nvidia's Rubin platform release on January 5, 2026.
The twist
CNBC's line that Sentry 'runs on network chips, not CPUs or GPUs' is accurate, and probably fed the 'new chip' reading. The chip is the existing data processing unit; the watchdog is the software on it, and Madrobot reports no price or date for Sentry hardware.
