Fanta Was Invented by the Nazis. Here's What the Records Say.

Fanta was not invented by the Nazis. Max Keith, manager of Coca-Cola's German subsidiary, created it from food industry scraps when the British blockade cut off Coca-Cola syrup in 1940. The Nazi Party never commissioned, directed, or even knew it existed.

THE ACCOUNT

This drink was born in 1940. In Nazi Germany. And the internet decided that means the Nazis made it.

They didn't.

Max Keith ran Coca-Cola's German subsidiary, cut off from its American parent when the British blockade sealed the supply lines. He did not call the SS. He called his chemist.

They made a drink from whatever industry had left over. Fruit pomace. Cheese whey. Saccharin when sugar ran out. Three million cases by 1943.

The name came from a contest Keith ran. Fanta. From the German word for imagination.

No Nazi Party commission. No order from Berlin. Snopes traced the story to its source and found nothing.

But here is what the viral posts leave out.

Coca-Cola's German subsidiary operated inside the Nazi war economy. Keith worked with the regime's bureaucracy to keep the factory open. After the war, Coca-Cola paid into the forced-labour compensation fund.

That part is documented. That part is real.

So the Hitler's drink story you shared is wrong. But the true story is darker. Not a Nazi invention. Just a corporation keeping its lights on inside one of history's worst regimes.

Verdict: BS. Just not the interesting kind.
