The Great Wall From Space

You've heard it your whole life: the Great Wall of China is the only man-made thing you can see from space. It's wrong.
So we checked the record. The claim is older than space travel itself. The English antiquarian William Stukeley speculated about it in 1754, a 1932 Ripley's cartoon repeated it, and Richard Halliburton's 1938 Second Book of Marvels stated that the wall was the only man-made thing visible from the Moon. None of them had been to space, because no one had.
Then people actually went. From the Moon, roughly 384,000 km away, Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean was blunt: no man-made object is visible at all, just a beautiful blue-and-white sphere. And from low Earth orbit, the Great Wall is thousands of kilometres long but only a few metres wide, and roughly the same colour as the land around it. Cities, airports and highways are far easier to pick out.
In 2003, China's first astronaut, Yang Liwei, returned from orbit and said plainly that he had not seen the Great Wall. The claim had been in Chinese textbooks; they were subsequently revised.
Verdict: BS. You can spot highways and airports from orbit. Just not the one wall everyone bet on.
