The Internet Says This Dog Was a Fraud

The most famous dog on Earth is, according to the internet, a fraud. They say he didn't wait nine years for his dead owner — he came for the free food. So we pulled the records.

1924, Tokyo. Professor Ueno brings home an Akita called Hachiko. Every evening at the same time, the dog is waiting at Shibuya station when his train comes in. On May 21, 1925, Ueno dies at work. He never comes home. Hachiko is 18 months old.

For the next 9 years, 9 months and 15 days, Hachiko returns to that station — through rain, snow, ten Tokyo winters. And yes: commuters fed him. Vendors gave him yakitori. That's the whole case against him.

Here's what the records say. He didn't wander the market stalls. He sat at one exit, at one time — the exact arrival of his dead owner's train. In 2011, University of Tokyo scientists re-examined his preserved body: four yakitori skewers in his stomach. Intact. The food kept him alive. It is not why he was there.

In 1934 Japan raised a bronze statue of him at the station — while he was alive. He attended his own memorial. Eleven months later he was found dead near the spot where he always waited. The photograph of the station staff weeping over his body is real.

Verdict: NOT BS. The food kept him alive. The train time is why he came.
