The internet's favourite war hero is a cat. Three sunk warships. One unsinkable legend. There's just one problem: we pulled the records.

The story: May 1941, the Bismarck goes down with over 2,000 men — and British sailors pull one more survivor off a floating plank. A black and white cat they name Oscar. Five months later his new ship, HMS Cossack, is torpedoed — her whole bow blown off. He survives. They move him to the carrier Ark Royal. Two weeks later a U-boat sinks that too. Unsinkable Sam.

The records: no Bismarck log mentions a cat. No rescue report lists one. The definitive account of the sinking, built from survivor interviews — no cat anywhere. And the photo the internet shares as "Sam"? A different cat entirely: Simon, of HMS Amethyst, 1949. Wrong cat, wrong ship.

What's true: ships' cats were real on every navy's decks. The three sinkings are real, on those exact dates. And in Greenwich's National Maritime Museum hangs a 1940s pastel portrait titled "Oscar, the Bismarck's Cat" — somebody believed him enough to paint him.

Verdict: UNPROVEN. A legend the records can't save, and can't quite kill.
