Everyone knows Balto. Almost nobody knows Togo — the dog who actually did it.
In 1925, diphtheria was killing the children of Nome, Alaska. The only serum was hundreds of miles away across the frozen wilderness, in a blizzard. Sled dog teams ran it in relay.
Balto got the statue and the fame. But Togo — a small 12-year-old lead dog — ran the longest and most dangerous leg by far, including a deadly shortcut across the cracking sea ice of Norton Sound. He saved the town, and was nearly forgotten.
