The 1859 Carrington Event: When the Sky Ran the Machines

In 1859, a solar storm set telegraph offices on fire, shocked operators through their keys, and lit auroras so bright that Rocky Mountain miners woke and started cooking breakfast — certain it was dawn. Some operators unplugged their batteries and kept sending messages on the electricity of the sky alone.

THE ACCOUNT

The internet says that in eighteen fifty-nine, a storm from the sun set telegraph offices on fire, and lit the night sky so bright you could read a newspaper at midnight. And that if it happened today, it would switch off the modern world. It sounds like a doomsday meme. So we pulled the records. September first, eighteen fifty-nine. An astronomer named Richard Carrington is sketching a giant dark sunspot, ten times as wide as the Earth, when it suddenly flares brilliant white. He has just seen the first solar flare ever recorded. A vast cloud of charged plasma tears off the sun and races toward Earth. Instead of the usual days, it arrives in seventeen hours. That night, the sky erupts. Auroras blaze red and green as far south as the Caribbean. In the Rocky Mountains, miners wake and start cooking breakfast, certain that dawn has come. And the young telegraph network, the internet of its day, goes mad. Sparks leap from the keys. Operators are shocked. The paper tape bursts into flame. Some unplug their batteries, and keep sending messages on the electricity of the sky alone. And the doomsday part is real. Scientists say a storm this size today would burn out power grids and satellites, and could leave whole regions dark for months. Verdict: not BS. The sky really did catch fire in eighteen fifty-nine. And the sun could do it again. The receipts are at bee ess killer dot com.
