The Emu War: Did Australia Really Lose?
there was no declared war and the emus did not win it: three soldiers with two jamming lewis guns were genuinely out-run by 20,000 emus in 1932, but the meme omits that bounty hunters then killed 57,034 emus in six months of 1934 and exclusion fencing settled the rest.
This bird is famous for defeating an army. That is the internet's favourite war story. We pulled the records.
It was not a war. Nobody declared anything. The entire force was three men: Major G.P.W. Meredith of the Royal Australian Artillery, a sergeant, and a gunner, with two Lewis guns, sent in November 1932 after Depression-era soldier-settlers in the Western Australian wheat belt asked for machine guns against roughly 20,000 crop-trampling emus.
The birds did not cooperate. They split into small groups and scattered; ornithologist Dominic Serventy wrote that 'the Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics.' At a dam ambush of about a thousand birds, the gun jammed after roughly a dozen. A truck-mounted gun could not fire on the rough ground and could not catch a bird that runs about 50 km/h. After six days: some 2,500 rounds for between fifty and two hundred emus. Parliament laughed; one MP asked whether a medal would be struck. The guns were recalled, sent back, and finally withdrawn on 10 December with a claimed 986 'definite kills' — about ten bullets per bird — plus a suspiciously exact 2,500 'wounded' that historians call inflated. Meredith's own report: 'If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds, it would face any army in the world.'
The part the meme never tells you: Australia stopped sending soldiers and started writing cheques. In six months of 1934, 57,034 emu bounties were claimed. Then came the real winner: hundreds of kilometres of exclusion fencing.
Verdict: PART BS. The emus beat the army. They did not beat the accountants.
