Every July the internet shares the same fact: in 1816, summer never came. Snow in June. Killing frost in August. And every July, someone calls it fake. So we pulled the records.

April 10, 1815: Mount Tambora in Indonesia detonates — the largest eruption in recorded human history. 24 cubic miles of rock and ash. 60 megatons of sulfur into the stratosphere, becoming a veil the size of Australia that circled the planet for three years, dimming the sun and bleeding the sunsets red.

The next year, summer simply failed. June 1816: snow falls on New England. Killing frosts strike in June, July and August. The coldest summer in the European record. Crops fail across two continents — they called it "eighteen hundred and froze to death."

And that same freezing June, endless storms trapped five writers in a villa on Lake Geneva. To pass the dark, they held a contest: write a ghost story. A teenager named Mary began hers.

Verdict: NOT BS. The summer really died. And in the dark it left behind, Frankenstein was born.
