Agriculture and food: what AI is really doing
Brief me in 2 minutes
AI in Agriculture and food.
Autonomous tractors have gone from a single self-driving unit to fleets that also run the implements behind them, but the highest-profile branded product in that race, Monarch Tractor, already went bankrupt and California still requires a human at the controls by law. Further down the supply chain, AI demand-forecasting software is quietly running fresh-food ordering for major grocery chains, and food-service robots and voice agents have crossed from pilot into real production volume.
The game: we show you 6 things happening. You call each one real now, early or mostly hype. Then the receipts.
Shift 1 of 6
Autonomous tractor fleets learn to run the tools behind them, not just the wheel
Early
Both deployments are real, paid work in live fields, not demos, but they cover one implement partner and five tractors on one grower's land, not a fleet-wide industry standard yet.
How it works. Carbon Robotics opened its autonomous tractor platform to outside implement makers in September 2026, letting a partner's tillage tool receive real-time sensor data and adjust its own depth and pressure without a human in the cab. Separately, U.S.
Overstated: Both examples are real but small: Carbon's open program has one implement partner so far, and U.S. Sugar's fleet is five tractors on one company's land, not an industry-wide changeover.
Shift 2 of 6
Retrofit kits stitch driverless navigation and computer-vision spraying into one labor-free system
Early
The combined navigation-plus-spraying system runs in real fields right now, but it is fresh off a funding round meant to fund its first broad commercialization push, not something already running on hundreds of farms.
How it works. Sabanto and Verdant Robotics integrated their systems so a Sabanto-equipped autonomous tractor now runs Verdant's SharpShooter sprayer behind it, with the sprayer feeding real-time field data to the tractor over the CAN bus so it adjusts speed and implement height itself. Sabanto closed an oversubscribed Series B in July 2026, led by Leaps by Bayer, to scale the retrofit kits across North America.
Overstated: Sabanto did not disclose the size of its Series B, and the integration announcement itself says the goal is eliminating labor shortages, not proving output or yield gains yet.
Shift 3 of 6
The branded autonomous tractor everyone knew went bankrupt, and the law hasn't caught up either way
Mostly hype
A company that raised over $200 million on the promise of driver-optional tractors is now defunct and sued by its own dealers, while the largest farm state still requires a human operator by law, so the 'no driver needed' promise remains mostly unproven outside a handful of pilots.
How it works. Monarch Tractor, which raised more than $200 million to build its electric, driver-optional MK-V tractor, collapsed into an assignment for creditors and had its remaining assets and technology bought by Caterpillar, after dealers sued alleging the tractors did not perform autonomously as promised. Meanwhile California's Cal/OSHA still enforces a 1977 rule requiring a person at the controls of any moving farm equipment, which blocks fully unsupervised tractors from operating around workers in the state.
Overstated: None. This is the correction to the hype: years of demo videos and an experimental regulatory variance did not save Monarch, and the safety data regulators wanted was never fully generated because Monarch reportedly ran a keep-out policy that kept workers away from its tractors during testing.
Shift 4 of 6
Crop-dusting goes pilotless: FAA-cleared autonomous planes spray real fields
Early
Paid commercial spraying flights and federal clearance are real deployment, not a demo, but current production volume is only around two dozen aircraft a year against a 1,000-a-year ambition.
How it works. Pyka's autonomous, pilot-free fixed-wing aircraft is the largest autonomous aircraft cleared for commercial civilian use in the US, and about a dozen of its planes are already flying paid spraying jobs over cotton and soybean fields in Brazil, work previously done by human pilots. The company sells each aircraft for $550,000 and is scaling production from around two dozen a year toward 1,000 by 2030.
Overstated: Production is still tiny relative to the 2030 target, around two dozen aircraft a year currently versus a stated goal of 1,000, and the planes still rely on short-range lidar for obstacle detection with AI-powered cameras only just being added.
Shift 5 of 6
Grocery chains hand fresh-food ordering to a forecasting model instead of a buyer's gut
Real now
Double-digit-thousand live departments and audited-sounding topline growth across named national grocers is paid, running production software, not a pilot.
How it works. Afresh's AI platform now runs merchandising, ordering and supply-chain decisions across more than 12,000 grocery departments in North America, including at Albertsons, Wakefern and Meijer, after posting more than 70% year-over-year revenue growth. The system replaces a category buyer's manual par-level guesswork with a forecasting model that recommends what to order and when for perishable categories.
Overstated: None named here; the growth and department counts are the company's own reported figures, not independently audited.
Shift 6 of 6
Food-service AI crosses from demo into real production volume, on the line and at the window
Real now
100 million real servings at paying customer sites and a live POS integration shipping to restaurant chains are production deployments, not pilots, even though the underlying tasks covered are still narrow.
How it works. Chef Robotics' meal-assembly robots have completed 100 million servings in production at customer facilities including Amy's Kitchen, giving it the largest real-world food-manipulation dataset of any food robotics company. Separately, Presto's Voice AI joined the Toast Partner Ecosystem in September 2026, letting quick-service restaurant chains route AI-taken drive-thru orders directly into their point-of-sale and kitchen systems.
Overstated: Both are still narrow tasks inside a kitchen or a drive-thru lane, not full restaurant automation, and neither company discloses error or override rates for how often a human still has to step in.
The scary part
What happens to jobs in Agriculture and food
What AI is already taking:
- Driving the tractor itself: retrofit autonomy kits now handle navigation and implement adjustment so no one needs to sit in the cab. Yahoo Finance UK (PR Newswire) ↗
- Flying the crop duster: pilotless fixed-wing aircraft already spray real fields in Brazil, work a human pilot used to do. BBC ↗
- Assembling meals on the line: robots now plate food at production kitchens including Amy's Kitchen, at a volume no other food robotics company matches. PR Newswire ↗
- Deciding what to order for fresh grocery categories: a forecasting model, not a category buyer's judgment, now runs that call at major chains. PR Newswire ↗
What stays human:
Someone still has to be legally and physically present when the automated call goes wrong: California still requires a human at the controls of moving farm equipment by law, and U.S. Sugar chose to retrain its tractor operators into command-station and maintenance roles rather than cut them, exactly the redeployment Monarch's collapse and the dealer lawsuits against it show cannot be faked with an unfinished product. Reading unpredictable field or kitchen conditions, and being the person a regulator or a customer holds accountable, both stay human.
Get better · 15 minutes
The skill that keeps you valuable is being able to supervise and validate an automated system's output under time pressure, like the single command-station operator watching several driverless tractors at once, rather than being the person who used to do the manual task yourself.
Try this this week:
Watch Carbon Robotics' own public demonstration of its Autonomy Ready program integrating a Great Plains implement (on Carbon Robotics' website or its YouTube channel) and write down every setting adjustment the system now makes on its own; that list is exactly the set of manual judgment calls being automated out of the cab this year.
Your move
The crowded lane is another tractor-retrofit or laser-weeding kit: Carbon Robotics, Sabanto, Agtonomy and Verdant Robotics already compete on exactly that niche. The open lane is the layer none of them sell yet: the labor-transition and safety-case tooling that lets an operator document retained-and-retrained jobs the way U.S. Sugar did, or the cross-vendor implement integration Carbon Robotics just opened up, since every fleet owner running mixed equipment needs it regardless of whose tractor wins.
Watch real usage counts over raise size: Afresh's 12,000-plus live grocery departments and Chef Robotics' 100 million real servings are the kind of number that proves paying deployment, not a demo. The red flag to probe is a 'driver-optional' or 'fully autonomous' claim with no published safety case behind it, exactly the gap that let Monarch Tractor raise over $200 million and still collapse after dealers sued alleging the tractors did not perform as promised.
If you run a farm, food-service kitchen or grocery department, pilot one narrow system on one line or one field this quarter and measure a specific number before buying more, the way U.S. Sugar tracked accuracy and reliability before scaling its autonomous fleet: test a retrofit kit on a single pass, or a voice-AI integration at a single drive-thru lane, and compare it against your current labor hours or order-accuracy rate.
The valuable skill is supervising and validating an automated decision, not performing the manual task it replaced: the single operator overseeing several driverless tractors from U.S. Sugar's command station, or the technician monitoring a Chef Robotics deployment, are the job categories actually growing. A first step is reading one public integration spec end to end, such as Carbon Robotics' Autonomy Ready program or Sabanto and Verdant's CAN-bus integration, to see exactly where the human handoff point sits.
What's actually changing
- 1
Autonomous tractor fleets learn to run the tools behind them, not just the wheel
How it works. Carbon Robotics opened its autonomous tractor platform to outside implement makers in September 2026, letting a partner's tillage tool receive real-time sensor data and adjust its own depth and pressure without a human in the cab. Separately, U.S. Sugar deployed five unmanned John Deere tractors across 255,000 acres of Florida farmland in May 2026, run around the clock from a central command station where one operator oversees multiple machines at once.
Why it matters. The bottleneck was never just steering the tractor, it was every tool dragged behind it that still needed a person watching seed depth or spray settings; closing that gap is what turns a driverless tractor into a driverless field operation.
What's overstatedBoth examples are real but small: Carbon's open program has one implement partner so far, and U.S. Sugar's fleet is five tractors on one company's land, not an industry-wide changeover.

Why it matters. This removes the operator from both ends of the job, driving and spraying, using aftermarket kits on tractors farmers already own, rather than a new machine they have to buy.

Meanwhile California's Cal/OSHA still enforces a 1977 rule requiring a person at the controls of any moving farm equipment, which blocks fully unsupervised tractors from operating around workers in the state.
Why it matters. The two biggest obstacles to autonomous tractors, whether the product actually works and whether the law allows it to run unsupervised, both remain open at once: the most-funded branded product failed commercially, and the most farm-heavy state still requires a human in the loop by statute.
What's overstatedNone. This is the correction to the hype: years of demo videos and an experimental regulatory variance did not save Monarch, and the safety data regulators wanted was never fully generated because Monarch reportedly ran a keep-out policy that kept workers away from its tractors during testing.

Crop-dusting goes pilotless: FAA-cleared autonomous planes spray real fields

The company sells each aircraft for $550,000 and is scaling production from around two dozen a year toward 1,000 by 2030.
Why it matters. Aviation autonomy is landing in crop spraying before it reaches passenger flight, because a pesticide run over a field carries none of the regulatory weight of a human passenger cabin.
What's overstatedProduction is still tiny relative to the 2030 target, around two dozen aircraft a year currently versus a stated goal of 1,000, and the planes still rely on short-range lidar for obstacle detection with AI-powered cameras only just being added.

Why it matters. Fresh food is the category grocers lose the most money on through spoilage and stockouts, so handing that specific decision to a model, rather than a chatbot or a back-office report, is where the real money is in grocery AI.
